Open Says Me

After almost 9 years, our roll-up garage door has finally said to us "REPLACE ME". Those darn cheap house builders (Shea homes) of course used the lowest end garage doors. From my observation, about three years ago (maybe more) I noticed a slight crack in the bottom section's lower cross support. This caused the garage door to dip ever so slightly in the middle front edge when it was rolled up. It took up until now for this little dip to cause a similar crack in the second-to-the-bottom section's lower cross support. Now this second crack is causing more of a sag in the door in its up position. The increased sag now fakes out the garage door opener in believing something is preventing the door from closing. Thus, when we try to close the door, it won't close! Only by pushing up in the sagging area while closing the door will the door close.

So yesterday, I tried to put my own band-aid on the thing by bolting a couple of 1"x2" wooden stakes to the second crack on the inside of the door. Seems to work OK for now, but I'll have to check into getting a new door soon. Bummers.

  • Hey, count yourself lucky. We have the old fashoned wooden door that makes a ton of noise when you open it. And, we installed our garage door opener ourselves and it sounds like shit. Couldn't get the angle right so it has to work really hard.

    Ahh, maybe someday...

  • Hot Fudge, don't forget: your beautiful faucets getting crusty from the hard water, toilets breaking off from their bolts, water pressure regulators koing kaput, etc...

Ahh, but why worry. Enjoy the remaining blissful years you guys have. You can borrow our home repair books when you need them :)

  • Lotus, are you two planning on getting a roll-up for the house in the future? Or are you content with going "old school". If you do decide to get a roll-up, remember to invest in one that has extra cross-beams for support.

HotFudge, to go along with Lotus' repair list, make sure your faucet and toilet hoses aren't the metal type. I've heard those things can crack after several years. You wouldn't want a water leak while you're out of the house.

  • Okay Screg, are you reading this? Lotus & Bert, thanks for the tips/advice. I guess we could also watch HGTV's DIY.

  • I'll have to double check the hoses. I think they're not metal...

I despise the idea of home repair. UGH.

Hmmmm... Now I'm curious to hear Lotus' and Shogun's garage door
